I was at the July 14 Sanitarium Concert at 3-Com in San Francisco, and it kicked ass. I arrived in the middle of Kid Rock, and - well...he puts on a good show, I'll give him that much. Anywayz, KoRn played next, they were amazing. They had a giant frame of their name, and on their finale - "Blind" - they set it on fire. So after that, I went down on the floor and waited for half an hour. Finally, the sun began to set, and the lights went out. Everyone cheered as the screens next to the stage showed movie footage of a cowboy running through and endless graveyard, to a recorded track of "The Ecstasy of Gold."

Metallica timed their entrance perfectly - just as the sun was sinking below the horizon, the stage lights started flashing and out of nowhere, Creeping Death started playing as the band became visible on stage. On the bridge, the crowd was chanting "Die...Die..Die..." etc., and it sounded great. They went straight into For Whom the Bell Tolls, which was awesome. One of the best live songs. After that, James started talking - said he had been in rehab for 5 days for his back, but he got out for the show "to see you beautiful motherfuckers." After doing the usual, "How are you doing, Frisco?" bit, he said. "Alright, now we're doing something for you old-school fuckers." Everyone roared, and they started Seek and Destroy, with the crowd yelling the "Seek and destroy!" part. They then started Fade to Black, which is goddamn excellent live. James sounded great - and he had this bristly hair and sideburns going down to his goatee that made him look like a wolf.

On the end of Fade, Kirk started this long, slow solo like the one on S&M (after The Thing), except longer (and better.). When he started doing the car acceleration, James talked a little, then did his cheer bit - "Gimme an M!" ("M!") "Gimme an E!" ("E!") "Gimme a T!" ("T!") "Gimme fuel, gimme fire, gimme that which I desire!" and they went into Fuel. That was one of the highlights of the show - Lars sounded hella good, and Kirk's solo was really impressive. They had some of the best fucking pyros of the night - lots of fire. After that, they went through No Leaf Clover (sounding excellent without the symphony - Kirk was much clearer), Whiplash (I don't like that song that much, but it was well done - Jason did vocals), and King Nothing (haven't heard the original, but I liked it.). Then they started Master of Puppets, sounding very good, with the same crowd participation as on S&M - but switched to Sanitarium as soon as they got to the first solo. (I call the medley "Rehab.") Sanitarium was another highlight - everyone sounded great. After the "Fear of living on..." bit, Lars switched beats in mid-song and they went right into the third verse of Puppetz. Incredible. After that, they did Battery, which everyone cheered for (since it's a tribute to that club on Battery Street.)

They went off stage for a moment, but came back on and started Nothing Else Matters - pretty damn good. After that came Sad But True, which was great. Some lame dipshit in front of me said "American Badass is hella better!" Everyone started throwing stuff at him - what a fucking dumbass. Anywayz, they stepped off again, and then started the battle sounds preluding One. After about a minute and a half, they got started, and it kicked ass. The Landmine Pyro was huge. One was yet another highlight. They went into Turn the Page right after, and that was good. They went off one more time, but came back on and closed with Enter Sandman. It fucking ruled! They did the long finale like on S&M, and had hella fireworks. After that, James yelled. "Thank you, San Francisco! You guys kick ass!" He and Jason went off, and Kirk started this bit. "

Kirk: "I love this place. Hey Lars, ask me where I'm from." Lars: "Kirk, where ya from?" Kirk: "SAN FRANCISCO, BABY! This is my hometown! You all fucking RULE!"

Kirk went off, and Lars went up front and said. "Thank you, everyone, for being here. You made this great. You made US great, we love you guys. We'll see you next year with a new album." Then he exited.

Top 5 Songs
1: Enter Sandman
2: Rehab (Mastertarium)
3: Fuel
4: One
5: For Whom the Bell Tolls

Best Performance
Kirk: Solo between Fade to Black and Fuel.
James: For Whom the Bell Tolls
Jason: No Leaf Clover
Lars: Fuel

Overall: Lars was great. I'm a drummer - and Lars is the kind of drummer that makes you either want to practice 24-7, or sell your set because you know you'l never be that fucking good.

Acoustics: Very good on the floor - but pretty bad up in the stands (I was there for the first half of KoRn.)

Best Crowd Participation: Master of Puppets

Best Crowd Reaction: No fucking idea...probably either Sandman or when they went into Sanitarium in Rehab.
