LARS ON THE RADIO
Our regular visitor [email protected] from Connecticut reports. A local radio station called "New Rock 104.1" coming from Hartford, Connecticut played the Metallica + Ja Rule song on the radio on July 1st at around 5 o clock in the evening. The radio DJ "Carlito" admits to being a die-hard Metallica fan for his whole life, but said the song was just terrible, and the rap/rock thing was another way for them to make $$ and sell out to their loyal fans. Tons of people called in insulting the pharaohs themselves, and saying how terrible the song is. This is when radio DJ Carlito decided to boycott the song and lock himself in the broadcast room until he talked to someone involved with Metallica. Let it be a spokesperson, Electra salesman, or whatever....

During the protest the radio station only played Metallica songs of all kinds and took calls from listeners about the situation. (I stayed up listening all night long and had the radio on at work.) It seemed like everyone was against the GODS because people were calling in saying they sold out, bringing up Napster, the hair cutting, the Load and ReLoad albums, and pretty much anything they could to say Metallica is just in it for the money. (I finally got through and told him he was full of bullshit and this is just a way to get more listeners and told him to jump off a bridge if he wanted attention, but that is not important.)

As the situation grew over the Internet from their webpage broadcasting people were calling in from all over the country (New York, Texas, Illinois, etc.). It was getting really out of hand. Well, 18 hours and a whole lot of Metallica songs later, LARS ULRICH himself called the radio station!!!! One of his agents or affiliates from New York City had heard about the situation and contacted Lars. Then at 1:56pm (eastern time) Lars called up from California!!!! He said that about a year ago Swizz Beatz had asked them to help out for his first new album under his own label. Swizz Beatz really "got his jollys off" over the idea of having Metallica on his album. So what they did was simply flew him into their recording studio in California and had him listen to a few of their new riffs. He then took some samples and mixed a song out of them and had Ja Rule rap over them. Lars said that the 'Talica boys just sat back and let them do whatever they wanted to do with it.

Lars was also comedically suprised at how quickly the song spread over the Internet. It surfaced over the weekend, and the radio was playing it Monday!

Lars then said how it has nothing to do with the new album (which I knew but it seemed like many Metallica fans were not aware... they should start reading your site!). He also stated that the new album will be very heavy, without the bluesy stuff from the Load/ReLoad cds.

Lars also said how this album is nice because they are taking their time in the studio not trying to beat any deadlines or plan immediate tours and try to quickly bang out songs. He said they have about 25 pieces to work with in the studio for the new album. And he promised Connecticut that it has been a long time, but they will be coming back to see their friends in Connecticut very soon!
